Cost of Bone Marrow Transplant for Bangladeshi Patients in India, Thailand, China | 7 Best BMT Hospitals

6 min read

If a hematologist has confirmed that a bone marrow transplant is the only curative option for your child or family member, this guide gives you the costs, top-ranked hospitals, and the exact path other Bangladeshi families have taken.

For conditions like thalassemia, leukemia, aplastic anemia, or lymphoma, a bone marrow transplant (BMT) replaces faulty marrow with healthy donor cells.

For thalassemia major, it is the only curative treatment, while for leukemia and aplastic anemia, it is often the only path to long-term remission.

My 1Health is the representative of partner BMT centres in Thailand, India, China, and Turkey for Bangladeshi patients.

We coordinate the transplant appointment, visa invitation letter, HLA donor assessment, accommodation, and Bengali speaking support from your first message, at no cost to you.

1. Beijing Jingdu Children's Hospital: Best for Paediatric Thalassemia and Aplastic Anaemia

The haematology unit at Beijing Jingdu Children's Hospital has performed more paediatric thalassemia BMTs for South Asian patients than any comparable centre in My 1Health's network.

Most transplant centres perform BMT across multiple conditions. Beijing Jingdu's paediatric unit is focused on haemoglobin disorders, specifically thalassemia and aplastic anaemia in children.

That specialisation shows in their conditioning protocols, post transplant monitoring, and outcomes for this exact patient group.

  • Procedure cost: USD 20,000 to USD 35,000 for allogeneic BMT (2026)
  • Conditions treated: Thalassemia major, aplastic anaemia, haemolytic anaemia, Diamond Blackfan anaemia
  • Accreditation: Specialist paediatric haematology centre
  • Key differentiator: Highest paediatric thalassemia BMT volume for South Asian children in M1H's Asia network

  • Bengali speaking interpreters

Bumrungrad performs autologous and allogeneic BMTs through its haematology oncology unit.

The transplant team reviews medical reports within 2 to 5 business days of submission through My 1Health.

For families who cannot obtain an Indian visa, the Thai eVisa process from Dhaka is entirely online and has seen almost no rejections for documented medical cases.

  • Procedure cost: USD 28,000 to USD 45,000 (2026)
  • Conditions treated: Thalassemia major, acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), aplastic anaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma

Visa, accommodation, Halal care, and documents

Most families who have gotten treatment abroad were guided by someone who had done it before, a neighbour, a colleague, a community member who returned and said this is how it works.

My 1Health is that guide. We handle the paperwork, the hospital letters, the visa facilitation, and the logistics, at every step, free of charge.

Medical visa by destination

i) India (Apollo Kolkata, Fortis Delhi, Medanta)

The Indian medical visa requires a physical application at the Indian visa centre in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, or Khulna.

My 1Health obtains the hospital invitation letter from the treating centre. This is the most critical document in the application. It confirms the medical case and accelerates processing.

Required documents:

  • Valid passport (6 months minimum validity)
  • Hospital invitation letter (My 1Health coordinates)
  • Doctor's referral letter from your Bangladesh physician
  • Medical reports and diagnostic results
  • Bank statement, passport photos
  • Attendant visa application for accompanying family (up to 2 persons)

Processing: 5 to 7 working days. Fee: Approximately USD 80 per applicant.

ii) China (Beijing Jingdu Children's Hospital)

The Chinese medical visa requires a physical application at the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.

My 1Health obtains the hospital invitation letter from Beijing Jingdu, which unlocks the medical visa category and significantly reduces processing friction.

Required documents:

  • Valid passport
  • Hospital invitation letter from Beijing Jingdu (My 1Health coordinates)
  • Medical diagnosis report, bank statement, passport photos
  • Completed visa application form

Processing: 4 to 5 working days. Fee: Approximately USD 60 per applicant. Attendant visa available.

iii) Turkey (Anadolu Medical Center, Liv Hospital)

Turkey requires a physical visa application at the Turkish Embassy in Dhaka for Bangladeshi nationals.

My 1Health obtains the hospital invitation letter and supports the full documentation package.

Processing: 5 to 7 working days. Halal certified environment throughout the stay requires no separate arrangement.

iv) Thailand (Bumrungrad International Hospital)

Thailand is the most straightforward visa route. The Non Immigrant Type O medical visa is available as an eVisa applied for online, no embassy visit required.

My 1Health obtains the Bumrungrad invitation letter within 24 to 48 hours of appointment confirmation. You upload it directly with the online application.

Processing: 3 to 5 business days. Fee: USD 35- USD 40 per applicant. Up to 2 family attendants on the same visa category.

Accommodation by destination and budget

The stay for a paediatric BMT is 10 to 16 weeks. Budget for two adults accompanying the patient for at least the first 6 to 8 weeks.

DestinationOptionCost per night
Kolkata, India (Apollo, Gariahat area)Budget guesthouses, Bengali speaking landlords, serviced apartmentsBDT 1,500 to 7,000

Istanbul, Turkey (Anadolu, Liv)Budget hotel, serviced apartmentBDT 3,500 to 10,000

i) Kolkata: Bengali owned guesthouses in the Gariahat area are the most commonly used.

Community referral from someone who has been before is the most reliable way to find them. My 1Health can point your family toward trusted options.

ii) Delhi: More expensive than Kolkata across all categories. Budget accordingly for longer stays.

iii) Beijing: A monthly rate is significantly better value for a 3 to 4 month stay. My 1Health assists in identifying accommodation with close hospital access.

iv) Istanbul: The city is structured for Muslim patients and families. Halal food requires no special arrangement throughout the stay.

v) Bangkok: Halal food is within 200 metres of Bumrungrad. Families who arrive at Sukhumvit Soi 3 rarely feel as isolated as they expect.

Halal food and Islamic care by destination

A 10 to 16 week stay is not a situation where a family should be managing food anxiety on top of everything else.

Every document My 1Health coordinates is prepared in the language and format the hospital and embassy require.

A Bangladesh doctor's letter needs to be formatted correctly for a Chinese embassy application.

A hospital invitation letter from India must meet the Indian High Commission's specific requirements.

These are not things a family should navigate alone, and a Facebook group or an unvetted agent cannot reliably get them right. My 1Health has done this for each of these destinations specifically.

Is thalassemia curable? What the 85 to 95% success rate means

Yes. Thalassemia major is curable with a bone marrow transplant. The transplant replaces faulty bone marrow with healthy donor cells.

When it works, the patient is cured. No more transfusions, no more iron overload, and the disease stops.

Research published in the Blood journal (2022) documents a cure rate of 85 to 95% in children under 14 with a matched sibling donor.

For children in that window, this is the treatment most likely to succeed.

For older patients or those without a sibling match, success rates are lower but transplants are still performed.

The HLA matching section explains the donor options when no sibling match exists.

This is a curative treatment. The right conversation starts with your haematologist and a bone marrow donor test for your other children.

How Bangladeshi families fund a bone marrow transplant abroad

Start with what does not work. Most private health insurance policies in Bangladesh do not cover international bone marrow transplants.

Government insurance schemes are limited to domestic care. Assuming otherwise wastes the time a family does not have.

What families have actually used:

1. Extended family pooling

The most common mechanism. Uncles, aunts, grandparents, and siblings contribute collectively.

The cost is distributed across households. Families who begin this conversation early, before the medical urgency peaks, reach the transplant window with funding in place.

2. Land or property sale

Some families liquidate agricultural land or property. The practical question is whether the asset can be liquidated within the transplant window.

3. Zakat and sadaqah from the community

Mosques and community leaders have raised BMT funds through zakat and sadaqah. The Bangladesh Thalassemia Foundation has supported some cases.

4. Employer advances

Government employees and some private sector firms have hardship grant or salary advance policies. Worth a formal conversation with HR before ruling it out.

5. Diaspora fundraising

Bangladeshi communities in the UK, UAE, USA, and Malaysia have raised BMT funds through WhatsApp networks.

This works best when the family has diaspora connections and a medical documentation package that donors can trust.

My 1Health provides the hospital treatment plan, cost estimate, and case summary that families need to support fundraising. We do not manage fundraising.

Frequently asked questions

How do I contact My 1Health for bone marrow transplant coordination?

Contact My 1Health directly, available 24/7

Share the diagnosis, HLA typing results if available, and intended travel timeline.

My 1Health forwards documents to the transplant haematology team, which prepares a tailored treatment plan and cost estimate.

We confirm the appointment, obtain the hospital invitation letter for the visa, and coordinate travel and accommodation. Completely free for the patient.

Can thalassemia major be cured with a bone marrow transplant?

Yes. A bone marrow transplant is the only curative treatment for thalassemia major. When successful, the transplant permanently replaces the faulty bone marrow with healthy donor cells, ending the need for transfusions.

The Blood journal (2022) documents cure rates of 85 to 95% in children under 14 with a matched sibling donor.

How much does a bone marrow transplant cost abroad?

Allogeneic BMT costs USD 15,000 to USD 45,000 (BDT 16,50,000 to BDT 49,50,000) depending on the country and hospital.

2026 ranges:

  • India (Apollo Kolkata, Fortis Delhi): USD 15,000 to USD 25,000
  • China (Beijing Jingdu): USD 20,000 to USD 35,000
  • Turkey (Anadolu, Liv): USD 18,000 to USD 30,000
  • Thailand (Bumrungrad Bangkok): USD 28,000 to USD 45,000

These figures cover the transplant procedure only. Contact My 1Health for a full breakdown including travel, accommodation, and visa costs.

What is the best age for a thalassemia bone marrow transplant?

The best outcomes are in children under 14 with a matched sibling donor. The Blood journal (2022) documents 90 to 95% cure rates in children under 7, and 80 to 90% in children aged 7 to 14.

For adults over 18, success rates are lower and complications are more common, though transplants are still performed. Age alone does not disqualify a patient.

Does my child need a sibling donor?

A matched sibling is preferred but not a requirement.

Options when no sibling match exists:

  • Haploidentical transplant using a half matched parent. Used at Beijing Jingdu, Fortis Delhi, and Medanta. Improving success rates, assessed individually.
  • Unrelated donor registry such as DKMS. Finding a match takes months, coordinated by the transplant centre.

About 25% of siblings are a full HLA match. My 1Health recommends testing all siblings before planning further.

How long does a Bangladeshi family need to stay abroad for a BMT?

Plan for 10 to 16 weeks for a child with thalassemia major.

  • Pre transplant conditioning: 2 to 3 weeks
  • Hospital stay post transplant: 3 to 4 weeks
  • Engraftment monitoring: 2 to 4 weeks
  • Outpatient follow up before return: 4 to 8 weeks

Up to two family members can travel as medical attendants. My 1Health assists with visa documentation for all travellers

Is the India medical visa open for Bangladeshi BMT patients in 2026?

Yes. Indian medical visas for BMT cases continue to be processed despite the general visa restrictions that began in 2024.

BMT cases with confirmed hospital invitation letters are processed as priority medical applications. My 1Health coordinates the invitation letter and supports the complete visa application.
