Tanzanian patients travelling for medical treatment abroad access specialist care in India, Thailand, Turkey, and the UAE at 60 to 80% less than private costs in Europe.
The question is not whether quality treatment exists abroad. It is which country, which hospital, and how to get there without being misled.
My 1Health is a global medical tourism company partnered with 350+ internationally accredited hospitals across 20 countries, assisting patients with hospital matching, cost estimates, visa support, and travel coordination at no additional cost.
Our team has coordinated cases for Tanzanian patients across India, Thailand, the UAE, and Turkey.
This guide covers which countries Tanzanian patients use most, what treatment costs by procedure, which hospitals our team recommends, and exactly how to start.

Why Tanzanian Patients Choose Treatment Abroad
Most Tanzanian patients seeking treatment abroad have already seen a local specialist. They travel because the specific treatment they need is not available domestically at the required level.
The core reasons:
- Specialist shortage: Tanzania has approximately 0.1 physicians per 1,000 people, well below the WHO-recommended 1 per 1,000
- Procedure unavailability: BMT, proton therapy, liver transplant, and advanced cardiac surgery are not available at scale in Tanzania
- Cost efficiency: the same JCI-accredited cardiac surgery that costs $60,000 in Germany costs $7,000 to $12,000 in India
- Technology gap: da Vinci robotics, Gamma Knife, and MAKO systems are not available in Tanzania

Best Countries for Medical Treatment from Tanzania
India is the primary destination for Tanzanian medical tourists. The right country depends on your procedure, your timeline, and your budget.
1. India
Best for: oncology, cardiac surgery, transplants, orthopaedics, and neurosurgery. India's JCI-accredited hospitals treat more East African patients than any other destination. English-speaking teams have the highest specialist volumes in Asia, and costs 60 to 80% below Europe. Most patients route via Nairobi or Addis Ababa. Cost range: $3,000 to $35,000.
2. Thailand
Best for: health screening, cardiac, orthopaedics, and elective surgery. Bumrungrad International treats 500,000 or more international patients annually from 190 countries with 70 or more on-site interpreter services. Cost range: $5,000 to $40,000.
3. Turkey
Best for: BMT, oncology, cardiac, orthopaedics. Anadolu Medical Center holds a Johns Hopkins Medicine International affiliation and has established BMT programmes. The strongest alternative to India for a bone marrow transplant. Cost range: $4,000 to $30,000.
4. UAE (Dubai)
Best for: urgent consultations, oncology, and cardiac. Direct flights from Dar es Salaam take 3 to 4 hours. The fastest route to JCI-accredited care for Tanzanian patients. Cost range: $8,000 to $60,000.
5. Malaysia
Best for: oncology, cardiac, and health screening. English-speaking hospitals, lower cost than Singapore, and strong international patient departments in Kuala Lumpur. Cost range: $4,500 to $28,000.
6. Egypt
Best for: cost-sensitive cases, general surgery, orthopaedics. Shorter travel distance, lower overall trip cost, and suitable for less complex procedures. Cost range: $2,500 to $18,000.

Best Hospitals in India for Tanzanian Patients
India has 81 hospital units in the My 1Health network. These are the hospitals our team most frequently recommends for Tanzanian patients, based on procedure match, specialist depth, and coordination experience.
1. Apollo Hospitals - Delhi and Chennai
Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi, performs over 15,000 cardiac procedures per year. The oncology unit covers chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and surgical oncology. Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, Chennai, is one of the few proton therapy centres in Asia. JCI-accredited. Dedicated East Africa international patient coordinators on-site.
In our experience coordinating cases at Apollo Delhi, the international team responds to treatment plan requests within 24 to 48 hours. For Tanzanian patients who have already waited weeks at home, that response time matters.
2. Fortis Mulund - Mumbai
Fortis Mulund is our first recommendation for transplant cases from East Africa. One of the highest-volume transplant units for international patients in India. Dedicated kidney and liver transplant programme. JCI-accredited.
Important for Tanzanian families: plan for 10 to 14 weeks in India for a kidney transplant, not the 3 to 4 weeks many first expect. Donor workup, the authorisation committee review, surgery, and post-operative monitoring all add time. We plan the real timeline with every family from the first conversation.
3. Medanta - The Medicity, Gurugram
Medanta was founded by Dr Naresh Trehan, one of India's most internationally recognised cardiac surgeons. The cardiac centre performs over 8,000 surgeries per year. Dr A.S. Soin leads the liver transplant programme and is widely cited in the international transplant literature. Gamma Knife radiosurgery and deep-brain stimulation (DBS) are available here. Our team has coordinated multiple East African neurosurgery and transplant cases at Medanta.
4. Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital - Mumbai
Kokilaben Hospital has the da Vinci robotic surgical system for minimally invasive oncology, urological, and gynaecological procedures. For Tanzanian patients requiring robotic-assisted cancer surgery, Kokilaben is among our first recommendations. Dedicated international patient centre with on-site accommodation options.
5. BLK-Max Hospital - Delhi
BLK-Max Hospital has one of India's most active bone marrow transplant programmes for international patients. For Tanzanian patients with leukaemia, lymphoma, or myeloma, BLK-Max is a primary recommendation. The BMT team communicates regularly with international coordinators, which matters for families in Dar es Salaam waiting for updates during a long admission.
6. Artemis Hospital - Gurugram
Artemis Hospital is JCI-accredited with dedicated cardiac and orthopaedic programmes. For Tanzanian patients who want Delhi NCR's specialist depth at a lower price point than the largest hospital groups, Artemis is a dependable choice for orthopaedic cases and standard cardiac interventions.

Best Hospitals in Thailand, Turkey, and the UAE for Tanzanian Patients
1. Thailand - Bumrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok
Bumrungrad International Hospital treats over 500,000 international patients annually from more than 190 countries.
It offers 70 or more on-site interpreter languages and is JCI-accredited.
For Tanzanian patients prioritising international patient experience, health screening or elective cardiac and orthopaedic procedures, Bumrungrad is a genuinely strong option.
For complex oncology or transplant cases, we direct Tanzanian patients to India first. Bumrungrad is our Thailand recommendation for everything else.
2. Turkey - Anadolu Medical Center, Gebze
Anadolu Medical Center holds a Johns Hopkins Medicine International affiliation and has a dedicated haematology and BMT programme. JCI-accredited.
It is our primary Turkey recommendation for Tanzanian patients requiring bone marrow transplant or oncology, where India is not the preferred option.
Memorial Healthcare Group is our secondary Turkey option, with JCI-accredited oncology, cardiac and health screening across 3 Istanbul campuses.
3. UAE - American Hospital Dubai
American Hospital Dubai is the most requested UAE hospital for Tanzanian patients in our network. JCI-accredited.
Strong oncology, cardiac, and general surgery departments with an established international patient centre.
For Tanzanian patients who need an urgent specialist consultation and cannot wait for an Indian visa or long-haul travel, Dubai is frequently the right first step.
Flights from Julius Nyerere International Airport run daily to Dubai with journey times of 3 to 4 hours. UAE visa processing with a hospital invitation letter takes 3 to 5 business days.
Burjeel Hospital in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is a strong alternative with particular depth in oncology and orthopaedics. Our team has coordinated East African cases at Burjeel across both cities.

What Does Medical Treatment Abroad Really Cost from Tanzania? Hidden Costs Explained
The procedure cost is the number that appears in every comparison table. It is not the number on your final receipt.
Tanzanian families who have been through this process say the same thing: the total cost is meaningfully higher than the quoted procedure price. Our team is direct about this from the first conversation.
| Cost Category | Budget Range | Notes |
| Return flights (patient) | $400 to $1,200 (Tanzania to India) $250 to $800 (Tanzania to Dubai) | Economy class. Business class on medical advice adds cost. |
| Return flights (companion) | Same as the patient | Budget two return tickets as a baseline. Most patients travel with at least one companion. |
| Accommodation per night | $25 to $80 India / $50 to $150 Thailand / $80 to $200 Dubai | A 3-week stay in India costs $525 to $1,680 for accommodation alone. |
| Pre-operative tests | $200 to $800 | Blood work, imaging, and biopsy where required. Often charged before the procedure package begins. |
| Post-operative medication | $100 to $600 per month | Immunosuppressants post-transplant: $300 to $600 per month ongoing. Critical to factor in. |
| Follow-up consultations abroad | $100 to $300 per visit | Most hospitals require 1 to 3 outpatient visits before clearance to fly home. |
| Currency exchange costs | 2 to 5% of the total transferred | TZS to USD conversion and international transfer fees. Use a specialist transfer service. |
| Visa fees | $30 to $100 per person | Medical visa application fees. Allow processing time before confirming travel dates. |
| Ground transport | $50 to $300 | Airport transfers, in-city travel and hospital transport throughout the stay. |
Worked example: a Tanzanian patient quoted $16,000 for a kidney transplant in India should realistically budget $22,000 to $26,000 all-in for a 12-week trip, including two return flights, a companion, accommodation, pre-operative tests, medication, and follow-up visits. The gap between the procedure quote and the actual total is $6,000 to $10,000. Families who plan for the real number travel with confidence. Those who do not face significant stress mid-treatment.
Post-transplant immunosuppressants (cyclosporine, tacrolimus, mycophenolate) are an ongoing cost that continues after the patient returns to Tanzania. Our team helps plan the medication supply chain before departure so there are no gaps on arrival home.

Medical Visa and Travel Requirements for Tanzanian Patients

India offers a specific e-Medical Visa category for patients travelling for treatment at recognised hospitals. Apply online.
Processing takes 3 to 5 business days. The visa allows stays of up to 60 days, extendable twice to a maximum of 6 months.
A companion travels on a separate e-Medical Attendant Visa.

Bumrungrad International's international patient centre provides the documentation needed for the application.
Turkey - e-Visa
Tanzania is among the countries eligible for Turkey's e-Visa, applied for online. Processing takes one to 3 business days and allows stays of up to 90 days.
There is no separate medical visa category in Turkey.
A standard e-Visa covers treatment stays. Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial's international patient teams are experienced with this process for East African patients.
UAE - Visit Visa
Tanzanian passport holders must apply for a UAE visit visa in advance.
A 30-day visit visa is sufficient for most medical trips and is obtainable through the hospital or a registered travel agent.
American Hospital Dubai and Burjeel both initiate the invitation letter on the patient's behalf. Processing takes 3 to 5 business days.
